![]() I mean Windows have an outgoing firewall, but it has full of holes in it, so this is kind of a little bit better.īut how about another concept? Another problem? When your computer tells you that you are connecting to an unsafe network. But this little app is also great in the bigger picture as your mac have a firewall for incoming traffic, but not for outgoing, so you actually first of all have no idea what is going on, what is talking to and TripMode now give you that visibility in a simple way on an app to app basis. ![]() It even have features that supports a metered connection, that can warn you when you pass a certain threshold and so forth. Different connections can have different set of rules, so a metered connection kan have one set of rules, an untrusted another and your home network a third. With TripMode you can allow, and disallow, apps to talk to the internet. To be honest I did not spread it to the family, might be that me and my wife have different “computer competence” or something like that, I just thought that she might not see the brilliance of this software as she would maybe not have the trouble with having to much “stiff going on” on the internet connection….Īnyway, TripMode is brilliant, even though I might not have used it to its max. So when TripMode got m1 compatible, and the whole “some services are whitelisted” debacle got sorted out, I bought it, not did I only buy one, I bought two, because I thought that this is something that is good for the whole family. I had heard about it before, but it got actualized through the site that keeps track on software that is compatible with m1 macs,, which is a great resource to find out which developers have done their homework and think mac users are worth the trouble, and which think otherwise. So what todo? Your machine will not help you here. Another problem with some connections is that they are very limited in speed, another reason to cut down on the chitchat. Your machine will not help you with this, which is annoying. I mean if the connection is metered you might not care about that big macOS update to be downloaded right in this moment, nor do you think it is necessary to let OneDrive sync. ![]() That is all good and well, but out machines nowadays talk a lot behind our back, and maybe it is just not what they are talking about that is a problem, it the amount of chitchat they do. Your mac is a fantastic machine that makes your life better, and smarter, but while windows ask you if the new network connection it detected is “metered”, don’t know exactly how Windows then will handle it, your mac is just happy to show you the internet. I have not for the moment, but still think that it might still be something you should do, a little bit like taking your corona shot just to keep everyone safe, not necessarily just yourself.īut moving on from that. So security, how come that is always up for debate when you are a mac user? I mean there is still the ongoing discussion wether you should have an antivirus app installed or not. Security has been important for a while, and sometimes you connect through a metered connection, and how many times haven’t that little notification come up and told you that the network you are connecting to is “unsafe”?
